Campsite views: Straits State Park St. Ignace, Michigan

In early October we were bumming around the Upper Peninsula in Big Red II, and decided we wanted to break up the drive home. I’ve always wanted to check out the Straits State Park, but every time I’ve checked for reservations, they’ve been completely booked. I also don’t love campgrounds where you’re on top of your neighbors, and the only way I tolerate them is if we get a ridiculous view.

As luck would have it, we were able to secure a waterfront site on a date that coordinated with our drive home. It was a Sunday, so that probably helped, and we only stayed for a night. We ended up in site 4-A. It was on the smaller side, but since we only have the van, we can fit in some pretty small sites.

The site only had one neighbor, as the other side backed to a community park area, but there was a nice tree line between the park and campsite, so it felt really private. The best part about the site of course is the view. We were directly on the water, with an amazing view of the Mackinac Bridge and the Straits of Mackinac. There is also a small beach right in front of the site.

The park is really close to the St. Ignace ferries, so it’s a great place to camp if you want to take a day trip to Mackinac Island. I would definitely go back for a longer stay as long as we could nab a water front site again.
