In order to avoid family gatherings due to covid worries, we decided to take the van south over the holiday break and check out another national park. Plus the warmth of Texas was an added bonus in December. We spent Christmas in Big Bend National Park, and enjoyed some dry weather hiking. It really is a stunning park – who would have thought there would be mountains in Texas?!
While in the park we camped in the van for a night in the Chisos Basin campground. It was surprisingly packed, guess we weren’t the only ones with this idea. There wasn’t any privacy between sites, and they were really small. We barely fit with the van, not sure how you’d even set up a tent. There were bathrooms but no showers, and lots of noisy kids running about.
We stayed in Chisos Basin site #32. There were power lines overhead, and it was really tight, but it felt a little more private than some because we were on the outside loop. The campground itself was really beautiful, sitting inside the basin and surrounded by mountains. It also had direct access to the Window Trail, a popular hike in the park.
The convenience and beauty of staying inside the park outweighed the privacy and amenity cons.
